OUR LEGAL WORK

We are a team of movement lawyers dedicated to obtaining meaningful results for our clients and supporting organizing and tenant empowerment in the Los Angeles area.

FIGHTING UNINHABITABLE CONDITIONS AND TENANT HARASSMENT

Our clients have suffered unbearable and unsafe conditions at their homes including cockroach infestations, lack of hot water and heating, mold, and even total destruction of their homes due to structural collapse or fire. We also have clients who have additionally been targets of landlord harassment and discrimination including: repeated unauthorized entry, removal of services, destruction of personal property, refusals to make reasonable accommodations and modifications, and illegal lock outs.

Out legal team fights against these illegal acts by landlords by litigating to ensure landlords are held responsible for their actions and that our clients are compensated fairly. LACCLA has won millions of dollars for tenants in the Los Angeles area who have suffered uninhabitable conditions and landlord harassment. We operate on a contingency basis, which means we do not charge upfront for our legal services.

Eviction Defense

Fighting displacement and gentrification is a collective act. LACCLA is not a high-volume legal services organization. We focus on defending tenant leaders both within our membership base and across the broader Los Angeles tenant’s movement.

Because we prioritize representing tenant organizers and activists who are fighting for the rights of themselves, their neighbors, and their communities, all LACCLA clients for our eviction defense work are referred to us directly from community organizations. In order to promote the sustainability of local tenant organizing, LACCLA does not charge any fee for our eviction defense.

CPRA WRITS

The California Public Records Act (“CPRA”) is a law that allows members of the public to access nearly all government records. This tool is valuable for activists and organizers seeking to hold our elected officials and other city and state employees accountable for their actions. Even though they are legally required to produce records, many government agencies attempt to avoid accountability by refusing to produce important records. LACCLA’s attorneys have experience in enforcing CPRA rights, and LACCLA has successfully filed many Writs to enforce compliance with CPRA, which have resulted in the desired record production for our clients.

If you are an organizer or activist in Los Angeles who has filed a California Public Records Act request, and you have not received a timely response, reach out by clicking below for a free consultation with a LACCLA attorney on how we can help you obtain the records you are entitled to.  LACCLA does not charge a fee for CPRA litigation.

Free Speech

In the face of repression, it is more important than ever that our community members can speak up for their rights. LACCLA helps defend community organizations and activists against bad-faith litigation intended to prevent collective power and free speech. LACCLA has successfully litigated multiple Anti-SLAPP motions in order to protect free speech and ensure that tenant activists and organizers can continue to speak up for justice in the Los Angeles area.

If you or your organization has been targeted in a civil lawsuit due to your organizing activities, please reach out to us for a consultation. All our civil defense work is offered at affordable, low-bono rates, and we are occasionally able to offer pro-bono representation depending on capacity and funding.

ORGANIZING CONSULATION

We offer legal consultation and ongoing strategic support to tenant associations and organizers outside of LACCLA who are engaged in live landlord-tenant struggles.

TRAININGS

LACCLA offers trainings to other lawyers and non-profits on community-based lawyering and offers trainings to community organizations on our Collective Defense Project, as well as how lawyers and organizers can effectively work as a team.
